Sorry

I'm sorry I've been neglecting SKwS lately. Between Our Last Quarterstance, the work I've been hit with lately, and some album reviewing I've been doing on the side, I'm a busy guy. But that's no excuse, and I'm sorry. I'm going to direct you guys' attention towards a few blogs who've been posting some new bands that I like (rather than just re-posting the tunes here), and then put up some stuff on my own.

Mr. Curioisty over at Covert Curiosity (and a writer for OLQ who did an excellent piece on Pink Floyd's Piper...here) recently did a post on Tap Tap. He describes them as "What...you get when you mix a little bit of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! with a dash of The Arcade Fire with a light dusting of Wolf Parade." That's pretty well spot-on, and I recommend you take a look.
As a side note, Tap Tap is on the amazingly cool label Catbird Records, which you ought to purchase things from at exceptionally good prices.

Brad at Both Sides of the Mouth recently did one on The Fratellis. They aren't exactly original, but it's really fun stuff. Like a "marriage between The Archie Bronson Outfit and Arctic Monkeys." I see a little bit of Pavement in them too, but I see Pavement in most bands these days. Maybe it's just hope.


The Culture Bully has been doing a lot of contests lately for free cds of some really good bands. Most of the time, giveaways are of lame bands, but they've got some good bands.


Speaking of giveaways, Ekko from Berkeley Place (another OLQ contributor...check his latest piece out here) has an excellent giveaway going on, too, for some free tickets to see Tapes n' Tapes and Annuals in DC on Halloween.


As for me, the band I've really been diggin' lately is Coach Fingers. I've been on a huge Man Man trip, so I've been into that Zappa/Beefheart kind of stuff, and these guys fit in well. They aren't as influenced by eastern European sounds as Man Man is, nor are they as strange. But they're still quite good.
